in stretching all the way from the Himalayas to the sea, west Bengal is nonetheless
explored in depth by few travelers. That may have something to do with the
exaggerated reputation of its capital, Calcutta, which is actually a sophisticated
and friendly city that belies its popular image as poverty-stricken and chaotic.
At the height of British rule, Bengal flourished both culturally and materially,
nurturing a vibrant creative blend of west and east. The Bengali Renaissance
produced thinkers, writers, and artists.
Day 2: Calcutta-Bhubaneswar
After breakfast, and a relaxed morning, a non air-conditioned coach is to
report by 1130 hours to transfer you to the Howrah railway station where you

hours and transfer you to Hotel Oberoi by a non air-conditioned coach. Overnight
stay at The Oberoi on bed/breakfast basis. Meal plan: Breakfast arranged by
Ibex. Lunch and dinner to be arranged by you. Bhubaneswar is one of Hinduism's
most active pilgrimage sites. The architecture of the Orissa temples in Bhubaneswar
represents a coherent development of the Nagara style of Indo-Aryan architecture.
From village huts to taxis to hotels, the smiling face of Lord Jagannath,
an avatar of Krishna and Orissa's main god looks back at you. The temples
of Bhubaneswar, Konark and Puri have elaborate and fascinating detail and
the construction began in the 7th century and continued until the 15th. The
structure of the Orissa temple followed exact mathematical rules that governed
the smallest detail. The temples contain the Jagmohan (porch), which is usually
square with a pyramidal roof and, immediately following the Jagmohan, the
cube-shape inner apartment that enshrines the deity and supports the soaring
tower. Sometimes one or two more halls - the Natmandir (dancing hall) and
the Bhogmandir (hall of offerings) - are set in front of the porch.

century (non Hindus are not allowed inside the Lingaraj temple, they can see

caves, and Udaygiri caves. Browse the local market in the evening. Overnight

Day 4: Bhubaneswar-Puri
After breakfast, proceed to Puri in the coach that will report at your hotel
at 0900 hours. On the way, visit the Konark Temple (THE Sun Temple) and the
fishermen's village. Overnight stay at Hotel Toshali Sands on bed/breakfast
basis. Meal plan: Breakfast arranged by Ibex. Lunch and dinner to be arranged
by you. A round trip to Puri and Konark, among the four holiest pilgrimage
centers for Hindus, according to Mark Twain, is one of the wonders of the
world. The route takes traverses the irrigated rice-growing delta of the Mahanadi
river. The Jagannath temple is the major attraction of Puri and for Hindus,
to remain here for 3 days and 3 nights is considered particularly rewarding.
The fact that in the eyes of Jagannath (lord of the universe) there are no
caste distinctions has made Puri a very popular destination with the devout.
The extraordinary form that Jagannath takes is believed to be the unfinished
work of the craftsman god Viswakarma, who in anger left this portrayal of
Lord Vishnu incomplete. This temple is referred to by some as the white pagoda,
the black pagoda being the Konark temple and was completed at the end of the
12th century. Note: Non Hindus are not allowed inside.
